When it comes to decorating any particular part of your home, you are far ahead in the game if you possess some type of photos to serve as your model, whether from a design magazine or a model home. If you have these photos or magazines in hand, it’s time to head to the home store.

Spend a few minutes taking another look at those pictures of your ideal room and try to discern what it is that you really like about those rooms. Consider the wall colors, window treatments, and floor coverings.

What is on the walls? Is there one large picture over the sofa or is there an arrangement of black and white photos in different size frames? What color is the matting and how much space from the photo to the frame? Details, details, details. Make a simple sketch of the layout of the pictures and their various shapes and sizes in your notebook.

Having the magazines or photos gives you a huge advantage at the store: you already know exactly what you want, how it goes together and what it will look like. But you also don’t have to break the bank to create your room. You probably already have the furniture pieces and accessories. Perhaps you already have some lamps and an area rug as well. You may be able to just rearrange these items in order to get a great new look.

A relatively inexpensive way to shake things up is to buy new chairs. New leather dining chairs or Parson chairs, for instance, can really give your dining room a whole new look. Modern dining chairs can even make a dated room look for more up to date. Home decorating centers, furniture stores, or even discount stores are good places to get ideas for new chairs. For really great deals, shop for them online.

Perhaps the simplest way to overhaul the look and feel of your house is to simply buy several buckets of paint. At the paint store or home improvement store, select the paint chips you think best match your dream room. Grab several samples, color can be deceiving and they can look different depending on the light. Take them back to the model home and see which ones match the best. Buy the paint and paint the room.

Be careful when selecting your new window treatments . If you copy your dream room exactly make sure you have the right privacy and exposure considerations covered. The wrong blinds, shutters or draperies and hardware can be a costly mistake that you probably won’t change.

If you realize that your couch or your chairs are not the right color for your new color scheme, a new slipcover can save you the cost of replacing them. Make certain your accessories are of a grand enough scale for your space. If not, pick up some new ones at the store.

Heading home with your paint, window treatments, and chairs or accessories, you’ll be well on your way to a room or whole home that makes you and your family happier than ever.
